New scheme to reward walking and cycling in London
Transport for London (TfL) are eager to get more people cycling or walking around the capital, and they have now partnered with Recyclebank to create a new initiative aimed at achieving exactly that.
Due to be launched in spring 2012, a new initiative will see people who walk or cycle in London being offered various rewards - they will be able to claim discounts and special offers at over 3,000 of London's stores and businesses.
A smartphone app has been built specially for the scheme - once installed, it will log journey distances, and points will be awarded based on miles covered. Users can then exchange these points for deals at participating businesses.
Ultimately, the aim of the scheme is to reduce pollution, ease congestion, and make people healthier. From the end of this year, TfL and Recyclebank plan to begin testing the system. They are optimistic that the rewards on offer will encourage more people to walk or cycle.
Recyclebank has invited both local and national businesses to get in touch with a view to further expanding the number of brand and retail partners involved with the scheme. They are keen to stress that the more businesses that come on board, the more successful the scheme will be.
Recyclebank already runs a reward scheme designed to promote recycling at home, in conjunction with several local authorities around the country.
Ben Plowden, from TfL, described walking and cycling as "the healthiest and greenest ways to travel," and noted that they are "already on the increase in the capital." TfL hope that this initiative will see the numbers improving further, with more people ditching their cars in favour of greener and healthier alternatives.
If you think you are too good to get around on foot or bike, think again. Wills and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge no less, are fond of cycling around London, and it's even been reported that they sometimes make use of the city's 'Boris bikes' when not on official duties. So get on your bike - you'll be in good company!
