There are many ways that a helmet camera can be used and just as many activities that you can use them for. Most of the time you will see skydivers using this type of device to record their glide through the air without tying up their hands. This creates a bird's eye view so to speak of their flight from the time the unit is turned on until they shut it back off upon landing.

Many times people will want to record a hike or a backpacking adventure without having to carry a video recorder or having to stop to take stills along the way. This type of device is useful as it will not require you to stop for stills or use your hands for holding it. You simply turn the unit on, place it on your head and begin your adventure.

Using this type of device creates a hands free way to record the time you wish you record just as if you were carrying a video recorder in your hands. Many of the devices that are available can also be purchased in a water resistant casing for use near water or in rainy weather.

In addition one can purchase options such as shock proof casings or water resistant cases that will help to protect the interior of the unit and ensure your adventures are fully recorded and viewable by your friends and family.

There are three general styles available for this type of product. Goggle style, side mount and top mount. The top mount are used by placing the unit on the top of your head either by wearing a hat that is set up for the unit or by strapping them on over your head. Various mounting options are available. The side mount units will be worn usually on a band around the head. Goggle style are mounted into the goggles so when you place on your protective eye wear you put on the device as well.

Top mount units should be used with caution although they are very popular for sky divers. They can add to the wind resistance of your body and cause you to have difficulty in your free fall.

These units use an SD card to record the activities which can easily be removed and used for creating DVDs of the adventure. Similar cards are used in many different types of units and there are various sizes available.

The SD cards are available in many different sizes. The larger the capacity of the card, the more memory you will have. When recording your adventures you will want to ensure a clear, bright image so you will want the highest capacity that you can find.
